Plot Summary:

In the 1920s, Fengleizhen in southwestern Shaanxi was poor and underdeveloped. To avenge his father’s death, He Futang endured hardship and bore his grievances, ultimately killing Liu Qingfu and thus settling his family’s score. Originally… The leader of the local militia, Wei Zhengxian, was at odds with He Futang. Assessing the situation, He Futang feigned allegiance to the notorious bandit Wang Sanchun. Amid the machinations of competing forces, he managed to stay clear of the fray and, by a twist of fate, saved Wei Zhengxian’s wife, Cheng Lixue. Moved by the picturesque yet backward‑looking charm of Fengleizhen, Cheng Lixue resolved to remain there as a teacher, striving to enlighten the people. Yet the “resentment of having his wife taken” drove Wei Zhengxian into a fury; under the guise of “suppressing bandits,” he provoked the Nationalist army stationed in Hanzhong to invade Fengleizhen. Seizing the opportunity, He Futang handed the formidable bandit Wang Sanchun over to the Republic of China government, thereby averting a devastating war. Determined to stake everything on one last gamble, Wei Zhengxian vowed to raze Qingmuchuan to the ground. At the critical moment, He Futang resolutely defected to the People’s Liberation Army, ushering in the peaceful liberation of Fengleizhen. Thanks to He Futang’s efforts, Fengleizhen escaped the ravages of war even in those bleak years when all seemed silenced and the skies were shrouded in gloom.
