Synopsis:
In the eleventh year of the Zhenguan era, Wu Ruyi was selected to enter the imperial harem of the Tang dynasty. It happened to be the anniversary of the late Empress Zhangsun’s passing, and the palace was rehearsing the “Prince Lanling” dance. With her peerless grace and dazzling artistry, Ruyi outshone all the other court ladies, and she encountered Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, in the Chengqing Hall. That year, Wu Ruyi was fourteen, while the emperor was thirty-nine.
On the night of the grand sacrifice, Zheng Wanyan met an untimely end, and all evidence pointed to Ruyi. Subjected to brutal torture, she was banished to the Imperial Concubine’s Palace. After a year had passed, Ruyi was released and, at the imperial court audience, repeatedly drew the emperor’s favor, earning her the name Meiniang and the title of Cai Ren. For a time, Ruyi became the target of every woman in the harem, ensnared in a web of treachery and intrigue. The struggle for the crown prince’s succession turned into a bloody, ruthless battle, and Ruyi found herself swept up in it. Their love endured under the weight of a prophecy foretelling the rise of a “female ruler, the Wu clan.” Though Ruyi sought to retreat as a means of advancing, she never imagined that Li Shimin would suddenly depart, taking with him the most passionate love of her life.
