Plot Summary:

In 1941, the European‑based mathematicians Lan Zhibing and Zeng Jieru, a married couple, deciphered Japanese military telegraph codes. Taking their only son, Lan Tian, they returned to China to join the New Fourth Army. However, their intelligence was leaked; scarcely had they arrived in Jiangcheng when Japanese forces set an ambush, capturing the couple and causing them to die for their country. Lan Tian, who had possession of the codebook, was rescued by the New Fourth Army, but the Japanese sealed off the city gates and launched a manhunt for him. Yin Sanyuan, the captain of Jiangcheng’s security force, was secretly a member of the Communist Party, yet he lost contact with the Party during an accident. In that critical moment, he took on the task of protecting Lan Tian, engaging in a tense game of cat and mouse with the Japanese military police captain, Takahashi. To ensure Lan Tian’s safety, Yin hid him in the backyard of an inn and, with the help of the proprietress Shangguan Yu and others, did everything possible to shield him. Determined to get Lan Tian out of the city, Yin overcame countless obstacles and ultimately sacrificed his life, perishing alongside the enemy. With the New Fourth Army’s escort, Lan Tian and his companions boarded a train, leaving Jiangcheng for the base area. The organization resolved to posthumously recognize Yin Sanyuan as a revolutionary martyr.
