Plot Summary:

Wu Hai, a student at Fu Jen Catholic University, harbors a deep desire to serve his country, yet his aristocratic temperament earns him exclusion from the Youth Anti-Japanese National Salvation Corps. Rejected and disheartened, he returns alone to his hometown, Wuzhen, determined to pursue his patriotic ideals through sheer personal effort. By a twist of fate, he rescues Li Cao’er, his childhood sweetheart, and hopes to enlist in Li Tiehan’s guerrilla unit through her. However, things take an unexpected turn: owing to the bitter feud between his father and Li Tiehan, he is mistrusted and ultimately driven out of the guerrilla force.
Meanwhile, Wu Hai’s elder sister, Wu Mei, both firmly believed that Wang Jingwei’s “peace movement” could save China and harbored an intense hatred for the New Fourth Army, driven by her grievance over her father’s murder. She stopped at nothing to exploit the Japanese army’s Kamei Unit, even promising certain favors to Kang Mazhi’s forces. In pursuit of meager gains, Kang Mazhi’s troops betrayed the New Fourth Army and launched a frenzied sweep against the guerrilla units. Wu Mei’s actions, in turn, earned the scorn of her own brother; Wu Hai resolutely shattered the bond between them. He joined the New Fourth Army, endured countless hardships, and grew through adversity, ultimately safeguarding Wuzhen at great cost. Though spring grass would once again sprout, the dead could not be brought back. With his gaze fixed on the future, Wu Hai led his troops away into the distance.
