Plot Summary:

     The young Du Xinwu was by nature unruly, but later was taken on as a disciple by Master Xu Aishi, where he befriended An Yulan and Guan Xue. He also came to know his arch‑nemesis, Longyuan. On the day of their grand wedding, Du Xinwu traveled to the capital to assassinate Empress Dowager Cixi, leaving his wife, An Yulan, behind to tend to her mother-in-law. After the attempt failed, Longyuan—now a palace guard—led troops in a relentless pursuit, but with Guan Xue’s help, Du Xinwu managed to flee to Japan. In Japan, Du Xinwu joined the Tongmenghui, befriended several revolutionaries, and began to develop feelings for Guan Xue. Longyuan tracked him all the way to Japan, colluding with Yamamoto to put Du Xinwu’s life in danger. Following the collapse of the Qing dynasty, Du Xinwu and Guan Xue returned home after completing their studies. Though racked with guilt toward An Yulan, Du Xinwu could not let go of Guan Xue. Using a cunning scheme, Longyuan lured Du Xinwu into competing in a national martial arts tournament, leaving him badly wounded. With Guan Xue and An Yulan by his side, he gradually recovered. When Yamamoto arrived in Beiping and once again joined forces with Longyuan, they seized Guan Xue in order to draw Du Xinwu out. To rescue both An Yulan and Guan Xue, Du Xinwu was forced to accept a duel with Longyuan. Rising to the occasion, he defeated both Longyuan and Yamamoto. As Longyuan raised his gun to kill An Yulan, Guan Xue stepped in to shield her—and was struck down. Clutching Guan Xue’s body, Du Xinwu departed with An Yulan.
