Plot Summary:

    1 In 945, after the Japanese surrender, Jinbei, Qindou, and several young men were conscripted by Wu Gan of the Jin-Sui Army. To his surprise, the captured Qindou turned out to be a woman. In order to shield her from being investigated, Wu Gan asked the Third Concubine of Regimental Commander Yu, Hua Wu, to “rescue” Miss Dou and take her home. But little did he know that the regimental commander’s eldest wife had taken a fancy to Miss Dou. She was ordered to bear a son for the Yu family and carry on the lineage. To save herself, Dou Niang devised a plan to delay consummating her marriage with the company commander, but with Wu Gan’s help, she managed to escape. At an underground Communist safe house, Huang Yu and Ma Wu happened upon Dou Niang and, reluctantly, took her captive. During her flight, Dou Niang was wounded and had no choice but to stay behind. She and Huang Yu fell in love, yet on their wedding night, the safe house was razed by Jin‑Sui troops who had received a tip-off; save for the station chief, Wang Yuren, Ma Wu and the others were brutally slaughtered. Faced with the devastation of the destroyed safe house, Huang Yu said he would go to contact his superiors—but never returned. Determined, Dou Niang set out to find him. With Wu Gan’s assistance, she tracked down Wang Yuren and learned that the organization suspected Huang Yu of betrayal. When Dou Niang finally confronted Huang Yu and witnessed his treachery firsthand, she, heartbroken, slew him with her own hands. Together with Wu Gan, Dou Niang acted as an inside informant, helping the People’s Liberation Army seize Heyang County, securing its liberation, and subsequently joining the PLA. In the end, while attempting to persuade Yu Guoming to surrender, Dou Niang was shot dead by Yan Sanjin.
