Plot Summary:

     The series centers on three families living in Beijing, with Yao Siyuan—representing the well-to-do, pillar‑type middle class—taking the lead. One family, the Zeng Wenpu clan, epitomizing moral integrity; another, the Niu Sidao clan, symbolizing corruption. Amid the tumult of this great era, these three families witnessed China’s transition from feudalism to democracy—some swept away by the tides of history, others rising with the times to cultivate themselves. As circumstances shifted and landscapes changed, only in retrospect did they come to realize that the nearly forty-year “dream of the capital” was but fleeting clouds and passing smoke; what truly endures in their hearts is the timeless human love that has remained constant through the ages.
