Tang Yan Makes a Stunning Comeback

“Yanyun Tai” is a grand historical drama produced by Shanghai Tencent Penguin Pictures Cultural Communication Co., Ltd., with Qi Shuai and Hao Jifeng serving as executive producers, Liu Beibei, Gong Xu, and Dong Xiaokang as producers, Jiang Jiajun as the director, and Jiang Shengnan as the screenwriter.

As Tang Yan’s comeback project, the series has sparked widespread buzz since filming began. In terms of its cast, in addition to the household‑name, box‑office‑drawing star Tang Yan, it also features seasoned leading men Dou Xiao and Charmaine Sheh, alongside a host of accomplished actors—including Jing Chao, Tan Kai, Liu Yijun, Lu Shan, Ji Chen, Shao Bing, and Wang Yuankе—making it a veritable gathering of top talent.

Exploring the Long River of History from a Female Perspective

The series is adapted from “Yanyuntai,” the latest novel by Jiang Shengnan, vice chair of the Zhejiang Provincial Online Writers Association, a deputy to the National People’s Congress, and a highly acclaimed author. It also marks Teacher Jiang’s second foray into the twin themes of history and women, following her hit series “The Legend of Miyue.” The editor is eagerly anticipating its release.

As one of the few historical dramas this year, “Yanyuntai” weaves the entire history of the Liao Dynasty around the life of Empress Dowager Xiao. Tang Yan’s portrayal of Xiao Yanyan is the third daughter of Chancellor Xiao Siwen and the Princess of Yan; from a young age, she was cherished by her entire family. With an innate warmth and intelligence, her resilient and decisive nature also won the favor of Han Delang and Yelü Xian. Her lifelong aspiration to defend her country set her apart from her peers.

In her career, when Yelü Xian fell gravely ill and entrusted both his family and the realm to her, Xiao Yanyan set out to overhaul the political landscape, defying widespread opposition to implement sweeping reforms that completed the Sinicization of the Liao state. This transformation steered the Liao from barbarism toward a civilized and prosperous era, achieving profound ethnic integration. On the emotional front, she dared to pursue and express her feelings, loving wholeheartedly and hating without reservation, fully embodying the forthright courage and boldness characteristic of the steppe peoples.

Beyond Xiao Yanyan, her two elder sisters—her composed and level-headed eldest, Hu Lian, and her second sister, Wu Guli, who is utterly consumed by love—each possess distinct, vivid personalities. Through the intricate entanglements between the three Xiao sisters and three powerful factions of the Liao imperial clan, the series illuminates the strength of women in ancient times—a theme that lies at the heart of its meaning. For in the great tide of history, no one is spared; the strong are defined not by gender or status, but by their convictions and their vision for the world.

To better convey the director’s vision and achieve the desired impact, while ensuring viewers enjoy a consistent viewing experience across all devices, we produced “Yanyun Tai” using advanced audio‑visual technologies—Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

We hope to capture every single detail of this epic masterpiece. Dolby Atmos represents a major leap forward from traditional surround sound, delivering an immersive audio experience that envelops the audience in a full‑dimensional soundscape, with clearer dialogue and distortion‑free playback volume—precisely the tools we need to bring our vision to life.

The sound team leverages Dolby Atmos technology to immerse audiences in the thunderous roar of galloping horses, the swirling snow and howling north wind, and the forthright warmth of the prairie people—transforming sound from a mere auditory experience into a profound emotional journey. The beauty of the grasslands lies in their boundless emerald expanse, in the dense, layered yurts, and in the草原 people dressed in splendid attire. Dolby Vision’s laser projection system, with its 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, exceptional brightness, and wide color gamut, allows viewers to discern even the subtlest details. We chose to leverage Dolby technology to render the cinematic image richer, more vibrant, and full of depth.

Through meticulous color grading, the team highlights the subtle patterns and intricate details of the ethnic minorities’ splendid ceremonial attire, bringing to life the exquisitely painted felt carpets and vessels that seem to shimmer with gold within the tent. This not only elevates the visual texture and aesthetic appeal but also underscores the status of the Khitan royal family, while showcasing the production team’s painstaking attention to costume, makeup, and set design.
