Plot Summary:
Tang Emperor Jingzong, Li Zhan, was consumed by pleasure and indulged in the wanton slaughter of foxes during his hunts. At the same time, he ordered extensive construction to expand the imperial palace on Mount Lishan, severely threatening the habitat of the mountain’s fox population. Unaware that this had sown enmity between the imperial house and the fox clan, the foxes came to both fear and hate humans—and even the imperial family—prompting the hawkish faction within their ranks to resolve to take revenge against the throne.
The fox clan secretly dispatched two emissaries: one was Huang Qingfeng, a weasel spirit, and the other was Hu Feiluan, a noble fox spirit and Qingfeng’s close confidante. Both demons assumed the guise of beautiful women, each representing the fox clan’s hawkish and dovish factions, respectively. Li Han had no way of knowing that one of these beauties bore designs of death for him, while the other sought to broker peaceful coexistence between the fox clan and humanity. Within the palace, the eunuch clique ran rampant. Li Han’s ascension to the throne was engineered single-handedly by the eunuch Wang Shoucheng, who also kept him firmly under his thumb. To restore the dignity of the Tang imperial house, Li Han secretly promoted Song Shenxiang while simultaneously sowing discord among the eunuch faction, pitting Wang Shoucheng, who commanded the military, against Hua Wuhuan, who controlled the court. By leveraging their mutual antagonism and keeping them in check, Li Han bided his time, waiting for the opportune moment to eliminate both factions in one fell swoop.Confronted by the rival eunuch factions at court and the power struggles within the imperial harem, Li Han found himself beset on all sides. Determined to eradicate the eunuch clique, reclaim imperial authority, and restore order to the realm, Emperor Qingfeng finally resolved to set aside his personal ambitions and stand firmly by the emperor’s side. In doing so, she repaid the emperor’s kindness, safeguarded the fruits of his victory, and strove to mend the longstanding feud between the fox clan and the imperial family, averting a catastrophic calamity for the mortal world.
