Plot Summary:

     During the fierce Battle of Shanghai, Lin Zheng led the Tiger Company of the Nationalist army’s German‑equipped division, earning repeated honors. Yet under the Japanese army’s relentless onslaught, the Nationalists were ultimately forced to retreat. Struck doubly by the loss of his superiors and his beloved, Lin Zheng came to loathe the enemy with a burning hatred. During the withdrawal, Lin Zheng took charge of a cache of military supplies and, through a series of clashes with Su Mei, captain of a New Fourth Army militia guerrilla unit, the two came to know one another—and, as they fought side by side, an unspoken bond began to grow. With Su Mei’s help, Lin Zheng concealed the vital supplies in an abandoned ancient town hidden beneath a secluded reservoir, using it as a base to deliver devastating blows to the Japanese forces advancing into eastern Zhejiang. Though young and ambitious, Lieutenant Colonel Xiao Shuihan of the Nationalist army, a graduate of the Whampoa Military Academy, lacked combat experience and found himself repeatedly on the defensive against the Japanese. When Lin Zheng came to his aid, the two gradually came to admire each other’s courage and skill in battle. In their campaign to eliminate Lin Zheng, the Japanese officer Ikujiro Sumikawa stopped at nothing. Tragically, Xiao Shuihan fell in battle, but Lin Zheng at last avenged him by striking down Sumikawa himself. Having endured countless battles, Lin Zheng finally accepted Su Mei’s love and resolved to join the New Fourth Army, setting out with her on a new journey to resist the Japanese invasion.
