Strong IP vs. Strong Creative Team

Strong IP

“The King’s Avatar” is adapted from the eponymous novel by Butterfly Blue, boasting an average Douban rating of over 9 and more than 2 billion views on its Weibo topic. With a highly engaged and loyal fanbase, it has been hailed as a blockbuster esports IP.

Strong lineup

The series is executive-produced by Teng Huatao, directed by November, and boasts a top-tier cast, led by rising heartthrob Yang Yang and acclaimed actress Jiang Shuying. It also brings together a stellar lineup of up-and-coming talents, including Lai Yumeng, Lai Yi, Sun Ning, and others.

This time, the Zhu brothers were fortunate to participate in the post-production of this S‑grade summer blockbuster, a project heavily promoted by Tencent Video in 2019, handling tasks such as color grading, subtitles, sound design, and end‑credit production. Every department went all out, working seamlessly together, letting the finished product speak for itself.

The Zhu brothers have consistently stood at the forefront of the post-production technology revolution, relentlessly exploring and breaking through existing barriers. For the post-production of “The King’s Avatar,” they leveraged two cutting-edge tools from Dolby Laboratories: Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

In color grading, the team produced both an SDR version and a Dolby Vision version. The series features numerous striking visuals of virtual worlds, and after extensive discussions with director Shiyue and producer Yang Xiaopei, they opted not to employ a garish, over‑the‑top palette. Instead, they chose to faithfully recreate the look of real‑world game interfaces, leaning the color tone of the “Honor” game scenes toward darker hues—more in line with actual gaming aesthetics and better able to enhance the overall texture and sense of technological sophistication. On the live‑action side, to distinguish it from the virtual‑world sequences, the team heightened contrast between light and shadow, enriching the color palette and adding depth. This approach ensures that characters transition seamlessly between the virtual realm and the real world, appearing not only natural but also more three‑dimensional and vivid.

The post-production subtitle team meticulously cross‑checked the subtitles against the dubbed dialogue and on‑screen visuals, while also researching esports‑related materials, watching esports competitions, and familiarizing themselves with industry‑specific terminology and the esports ecosystem, ensuring the professionalism and accuracy of the subtitles.

Under the guidance of November’s director and through efficient communication and collaboration with the production team and various departments, the sound artists at Zhu Brothers delivered high‑quality audio, producing both Dolby Atmos and stereo mixes. Dolby Atmos, a cutting‑edge cinema audio platform from Dolby Laboratories, differs from conventional surround sound by incorporating additional speaker channels, enabling a more immersive, realistic, and crystal‑clear soundscape. Moreover, to faithfully recreate the dynamic intensity of online gaming battles, Zhu Brothers’ sound team meticulously refined every element—character dialogue, skill effects, and UI cues—ensuring viewers feel fully immersed and experience the electrifying energy of Honor of Kings, achieving a seamless harmony between sound and visuals.
